Where were
you on September 11, 2001?

Fourteen
years ago we were all somewhere. Some were too young to remember, like when I was little
and my father awoke me to show me the black and white television when the first
astronauts walked on the moon. They
planted a flag. The American flag, a

this man-on-the-moon memory with the night my father awoke me to show the cat

space under the kitchen sink. Childhood
memories spark from photographs and can develop through stories parents tell. Or from remembering extraneous events seemingly related. Fact becomes fiction and vice versa. They
become beleifs.

space after years of street vending. We
opened on September 6th 2001. Those were the days of plenty in the seven
most industrialized countries. Italy was one of them. Our atelier was in
Florence.

A wonderful
couple came into our shop. I’ll call it
a shop but it really was our painting atelier, in Florence’s downtown gallery
district. On via Ghibellina. Frescoes
arched across the ceiling, terracotta tiles covered the floor, our paintings
lined four walls. The couple told me
they were on a win-win vacation. They loved our paintings, paid for a few and
said they would return to pick up the packed canvases with frames. We didn’t have a radio, we listened to
classical music, heads in the clouds. On
the shop window, I’d taped a photo of one of my best clients who posed next to
Bill Clinton, plus several photos of myself on NBC, clearly marking our space
as American friendly. This was the
touristic district of Florence. We made
and sold paintings for the tourism market.
We painted poppies by the field.
Americans were our best clients after the Berlin wall fell and the
Germans counted their marks and after I was interviewed by Matt Laur live from
Florence.

almost everyday. He ranted more than

wasn’t conceived. She didn’t have cable. After the movie went no where, she
realized she was watching an Italian news channel.

was a shop like ours. Terracotta floors, four walls but barren. Hundreds
of these guys walked the street, against traffic, the wrong way. Chins in the
air.

to be buzzed in. The wonderful couple returned. Their smiles gone, bewilderment
and worry filled their eyes. Their win-win vacation over.

That night
a friend of mine told me she went to dinner at her boyfriend’s restaurant. Many Florentine shop owners, not Italians but nationality is unimportant, dined there,
people who sold leather jackets and bags to tourists. My friend
told me these people uncorked champagne and told the whole restaurant they would send their children to death
as kamikazes. It was appalling. Remembering is appalling. Others told me the American’s deserved it. I wonder what they think now? After the
Charlie Hebdo attacks, after a little girl carried a bomb into a Nigerian
market, while Syria is still happening. Were these people not living it up in
the win-win laic land of plenty? Spitting in the hand that fed them.

The Luxembourg Gardens are always beautiful but this Spring the layers of green are more evident than last year. Last year Spring exploded in one week. The pollen didn't have time to build up. This year, Spring is what we imagine and expect.

I haven't posted in some time because I'm busy rewriting and planning a
new website where I can encorporate my two blogs. No idea when that will be because in October I have a show and
have to produce 80 paintings. Plus finish this rewrite.

Luxembourg Gardens is tourist Paris, though locals hang there too. I do. It's in my hood.

But there is another Paris, a street artist's city. It's grungy and dark. Here is a mural, in the 13th arrondissement, near the Biblioteque François Mitterand. Notice the trees have no leaves. This photo was not today.

The other side of Paris, the street art scene, is important in the
manuscript I'm rewriting. For the last year I have immersed myself in street art and graffiti. It's exciting stuff, like the manholes on boulevard Saint Michel, where taggers descend into the catacombs -- backpacks full of goodies.

The working title is White Sky of Paris. See the sky is? In Paris the sky is often white.

An
artist once told me he would mix phtalo green with quinadricone red and
add white. It was the perfect color for the Parisian sky. I thought,
yuck, you can't mix those two colors but he was right.
This is one of my favorite views of Paris

The sculpture is by Jean Terzieff. It's entitled La Femme aux Pommes. Two apples held apart by naked beauty. The two bad apples represent the opposing forces before WWII.

The stone building is the Senat but was once the home of Catherine de Medici and was modelled after the Pitti Palace in Florence. The skyscraper is the Montparnasse tower.

The photo is from last week.

And so is this, the cherry tree blossoms in Parc des Sceaux just south of Paris.

Under the cherry blossoms everyone was there, like the entire city. It was standing room only. There were people dressed up like samurai and others in traditional Japanese kimonos playing instruments I've never seen.

This is Paris today. So much for the May 1st parade. It's 10°C.

A Throw-Up is also called a throwie. It's a graffiti piece quick to paint, usually block lettering or rounded lettering with shadows. Usually they are one step to the right and one to the left. Train cars and delivery trucks are covered with them. Here, the writer risked falling two stories or more onto the stone banks of the Seine. This peice is located close to the Pont Notre-Dame just accros from the Marché au Fleurs on la Cité.

This is currently one of my favorite throwies in Paris. It can be seen from far. It's up on the back of a bouquiniste -- those book vendors lining the Seine's banks.

See how high the wall is? I took this photo on a different day. Paris is beautiful, n'est-ce pas?

Graffiti is one of the four creative mediums in the hip hop movement. Music, especially rap and turntablism are also part of it. I wonder if the graffer was thinking of Jason Derulo when he/she wrote BUBLE BUTT.

Here's the song. How many moblie phones use that whistle?
Why do these people risk their lives to graff these ugly places? I don't know. I've been researching this for over a year. Graffiti in Paris struck me when I moved here. I wasn't used to it. I doubt I ever will be. What makes graffers tick. I've come to beleive that it is freedom of expression at its extreme.

Just entering Paris there is a ribbon of tiles that is there to beautify. It was surely funded by public money. Taggers left their mark and paste-ups publicize concerts. When it's gridlock drivers have the time to read the small type.

After hours of researching the origin of graffiti, I found that according to the Global Brittanica, the word graffiti derives from the Italian word sgraffito.

Because I speak Italian I know that the Global Brittanica gives a bad translation and because I am an artist I know their examples, in part, are lame. Whoever wrote the definition says that in panel painting and illuminated manuscripts the ground was gold leaf. That is not true. For panel painting the ground was, and still is bolo. I'm not sure about illuminated manuscripts but in both cases, sgraffito technique is not involved. The Global Brittanica states that graffito technique was especially used during the middle ages but if you go to Florence or Venice you know that those buildings were decorated during the Renaissance. That's a couple hundred years difference.

So what is Graffiti?

Here is a better definition:

According to the online Italian dictionary Treccani, graffito is a type of decoration used in architecture. The graffer (my word from the commonly used French word graffeur) inscribes the wet stucco of a façade to reveal an under-layer. The technique was (yes) used on medieval palaces but mostly done between 1400 and 1500. In the 1700s there was a revival. Following a design, the graffer removed the top layer of stucco and a exposed the colored underlayer.

Treccani states:

Graffito is done through using a point to incise a surface - stone, metal, plaster, a wall, a vase, you name it.

It is a drawing or inscription on a surface or object, more often a wall. In prehistoric times, documents were incised on rocks and clay tablets. It seems banking records were incised on stone, thus the colloquial saying: written in stone.

Modern day graffiti seems to have all started in the toilet. Here is an excellent article on the Hiphop<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , "geneva" , "swiss" ,;">-Network:
According to Gadsby's extensive bilbiography, over sixty years ago men and women wrote on bathroom walls. Could this be the beginning of what we consider graffiti in modern times? She writes that "<span class="copy" style="font-family: "verdana" , "arial" , "helvetica"; font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , "geneva" , "swiss" ,;">The 1970s were halcyon days of graffiti research".

The Treccani dicitonary states that by analogy, graffiti as we know it today, started in NYC in the 1970's. It states also that the film American Graffiti by G. Lucas in 1973, seems to have ignited the explosion. Treccani's definition states that the film refers to the documentary value of prehistoric graffiti, a sign of the past. And it was a revival of taste, fashion, clothing, music of the 1950's.
This 90 minute documentary explains the rise and change of graffiti in Paris starting from the great NYC influence to the newest generation. It's in French.

Graffiti is a term that derives from the two words, writing and calligraphy.

Graffers did not say, "Hey, let's go grafffiting." They said they were going writing.

A tag is a linear drawing of a name or pseudonym. A graffiti is the stylization of letters. A graffiti gives form and volume to the letters. It is personalized.

Wild style was developed in Paris, then freestyle came along, then throwups.

According to the photographer, Henry Chaftan, who documented the book Spraycan Art, Parisian graffers style was "art school" compared to the energetic New York City graffers.

Street art fascinates me. I don't condone it or condem it.

Street art is on the street, not in galleries.
I would travel to China just to buy a set of these.

The writer Matthew Nieder was has a wonderful post about the Meeting of Styles where the banks of the river were allowed to be graffed.

And here is an article from 2008. Appharently chinese collectors do not consider street art investable. Well twenty years ago in Paris they didn't either. After years of it in your face, things have changed.

In Taidong there is a whole block of graffed buildings, part of an urban project, perhaps something like the mairie of the 13th arrondissemet in Paris. You can see more on Flikr

All I can say to the Chinese graffers is to keep at it. In twenty years there will be a new generation of rich who will most likely be fighitng over your work.

Tastes change but urban art is a world wide movement that can't be stopped.

What's a paste-up? Usually it's a peice of paper glued to an urban surface with wheat paste or wall paper glue. Paste-ups are considered less offensive to the urban envirnoment because they can be peeled or washed off.

Here is a video of paste-up interventions done by women in Brazil. They have motive and means.
This wall is a busy place. Those posters might be advertising for underground Parisian rave party in abandoned metro stations or perhaps the catacombs. We'll see about that next week.

To call it a throwie is not quite correct, but how did the artist paint those spots on the wall? Surely with paint filled balloons. Around town there are many walls painted buy this artist. There's one in Saint Germain des Prés, on rue Saint André des Arts.
